What is Place Value?
Place value is a way to understand the value of each digit in a number based on its position. For example, in the number 5,432:
The digit 5 is in the thousands place, so it means 5,000.
The digit 4 is in the hundreds place, so it means 400.
The digit 3 is in the tens place, so it means 30.
The digit 2 is in the ones place, so it means 2.
Reading and Writing Big Numbers
In Year 5, you will learn to read and write numbers up to at least 1,000,000. Here’s how to read a big number like 762,345:
762,345 is read as "seven hundred sixty-two thousand, three hundred forty-five."
Comparing Numbers
Comparing numbers means deciding which number is bigger, smaller, or if they are equal. You compare numbers by looking at the digits from left to right. Here’s how to compare 456,789 and 654,321:
Start with the leftmost digit. In 456,789, the first digit is 4. In 654,321, the first digit is 6.
Since 6 is bigger than 4, 654,321 is greater than 456,789.
Ordering Numbers
Ordering numbers means arranging them from smallest to largest or largest to smallest. Here’s how to order the numbers 234,567, 123,456, and 345,678 from smallest to largest:
Look at the first digit of each number. 123,456 has a 1, 234,567 has a 2, and 345,678 has a 3.
Since 1 is the smallest, 123,456 comes first.
Next is 234,567 because 2 is smaller than 3.
Finally, 345,678 is the largest.
So, the order is: 123,456; 234,567; 345,678.
Rounding Numbers
Rounding numbers means finding the closest ten, hundred, thousand, etc., to make a number simpler. Here’s how to round 768 to the nearest hundred:
Look at the tens digit (6 in this case).
If the tens digit is 5 or more, round up. If it’s less than 5, round down.
Since 6 is more than 5, we round up.
768 rounded to the nearest hundred is 800.
Negative Numbers
Negative numbers are numbers less than zero. They are written with a minus sign (-). You will learn to count forwards and backwards with negative numbers. For example:
Counting from 3 to -3: 3, 2, 1, 0, -1, -2, -3.
