Algebra and BODMAS/BIDMAS/PEMDAS (Year 5)
Algebra introduces you to working with symbols like letters (e.g., xxx) in place of numbers to solve problems. It's like solving puzzles where you find the value of a missing piece. For example, x+3=7x + 3 = 7x+3=7. What is xxx? (Hint: It's 4!)
To solve these problems correctly, we follow specific rules to calculate in the right order. This is where BODMAS or BIDMAS comes in:
B: Brackets (solve anything in brackets first)
O/D: Orders (like squares or powers) or Division
M/A: Multiplication or Addition
A/S: Addition or Subtraction (from left to right)
In some places, it's called PEMDAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction), but the idea is the same!
By learning these rules, you'll know how to solve problems step by step without getting confused. For example: (2+3)×4=20(2 + 3) \times 4 = 20(2+3)×4=20 (Solve brackets first, then multiply).
Understanding algebra and these rules will make math easier and help you solve real-life problems like calculating costs or solving patterns.
